Continuum
An installation whose motif is the “eternal flame” kept burning at Yamadera for some 1,200 years.
At its foundation lies ichigū wo terasu: the idea that each person’s small act lights the space around them and, in time, joins into a greater light.
A flame unlike anyone else’s rises in the space for each visitor, according to their state. The flames resonate quietly with one another and, wrapped in the lingering resonance of sound, grow into one great flame that enfolds the room. Here you can feel small flames answering each other, and the chain of light handed on across the ages.
The eternal flame: the undying light kept at Yamadera (Risshaku-ji) since its founding. Shared from Enryaku-ji on Mount Hiei, the flame is said to have been carried back from Yamadera to Enryaku-ji after Oda Nobunaga burned the mountain — a deep historical tie between the two temples that survives to this day.
